A different view. Ilana van Zyl.
Ilana van Zyl is a South African oil painter living in Canada, giddy colourist and all around lover of all things creative and whimsical. Her works look like photos with inverted colours or taken by night vision camera... That's what she says about her personal style:
"My work explores the relationship between memory, landscapes and the cathartic qualities of colour. I am interested in the sense of connection we feel towards landscapes from our past. What intrigues me is the romanticized notion of a place that has inevitably changed in our absence, and will likely result in estrangement upon returning to it. In anticipation of this sense of alienation, I create a new colour palette for the landscapes. Colour becomes the cathartic vehicle that allows me to transform the landscape into a place that never existed, thereby circumventing the expected alienation".
